FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD Carbon oxides formed when burned. Highly flammable vapors which are heavier than air may accumulate in low areas and/or spread along ground away from handling site. Flash back along vapor trail is possible.

SPECIAL FIREFIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS Evacuate area of all unnecessary personnel. Wear appropriate safety equipment for fire conditions including NIOSH/MSHA(1) self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Shut off source if possible. Water fog or spray may be used to cool exposed containers and equipment. Do not spray water directly on fire – product will float and could be reignited on surface of water.

        EFFECTS OF SINGLE OVEREXPOSURE

SWALLOWING:
(INGESTION)
An unlikely route of exposure, but frostbite of the lips and mouth may result from contact with the liquid. If swallowed, may be aspirated resulting in inflammation and possible fluid accumulation in the lungs.
SKIN ABSORPTION: Prolonged or widespread skin contact with the liquid may result in frost bite or absorption of harmful amounts of material. Vapors are not irritating. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause defatting of the skin leading to skin irritation.
INHALATION: Vapors may be mildly irritating. High concentrations may cause dizziness, disorientation, headache, excitation, anesthesia, and central nervous system depression. The inhalation LC50 (rats) for isopentane is greater than 4094.27 ppm for a four hour exposure period and fourteen days post-exposure observation period.
SKIN CONTACT: Liquid may cause frostbite. Vapors are not irritating.
EYE CONTACT: Vapors may be mildly irritating.

EFFECTS OF REPEATED OVEREXPOSURE

No evidence of adverse effects from available information.

OTHER EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE

At very high concentrations may produce cardiac arrhythmia’s or arrest due to sensitization of the heart to adrenaline and noradrenaline. Exposure to fluorocarbon thermal decomposition products may produce flu-like symptoms including chills, fever, weakness, muscular aches, headache, chest discomfort, sore throat, and dry cough. Complete recovery usually occurs within 24 hours after exposure.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED BY OVEREXPOSURE

A knowledge of the available toxicology information and of the physical and chemical properties of the material suggests that overexposure is unlikely to aggravate existing medical conditions.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES

SWALLOWING:
      (INGESTION)
If a large volume (several ounces) has been swallowed, obtain immediate medical attention. Do not induce vomiting.
SKIN: For exposure to liquid, immediately warm frostbite area with warm water (not to exceed 105oF). In case of massive exposure, remove clothing while showering with warm water. Obtain medical attention.
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air. Give artificial respiration if not breathing. Oxygen may be given by qualified personnel if breathing is difficult. Obtain medical attention.
EYES: Immediately flush eyes thoroughly with water and continue washing for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention, preferably from an ophthalmologist, urgently.

NOTES TO PHYSICIAN

1. Do not administer adrenaline due to the sensitizing effect of fluorocarbons on the myocardium. Treatment of overexposure should be directed at the control of symptoms and the clinical condition of the patient. Exposure to fluorocarbon pyrolysis products should be considered in the diagnostic evaluation of occupationally related fever of short duration and unknown origin. Signs of exposure include tachycardia, hyperpnea, and pharyngeal congestion; investigation may reveal pulmonary edema and leucocytosis.
2. Gastric lavage using a cuffed endotracheal tube may be performed at your discretion.

 

PROTECTION INFORMATION

GENERALLY APPLICABLE CONTROL MEASURES

Normal ventilation for standard manufacturing procedures is generally adequate. Local exhaust should be used when large amounts are released. Mechanical ventilation should be used in low places.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Neoprene, nitrile or lined butyl gloves should be used to avoid prolonged or repeated exposure. Faceshield or Monogoggles should be worn as needed to prevent eye contact. Other protective equipment required: eye bath, safety shower, chemical apron. Under normal use conditions, no respiratory protection is required when using this product. Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is required if a large spill occurs.

SPILL, LEAK, AND DISPOSAL PROCEDURES

PRECAUTIONS REQUIRED IF MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED:

Evacuate area of all unnecessary personnel. Wear protective equipment and/or garments described in Section on “Protection Information” above if exposure conditions warrant. Shut off source, if possible and contain spill. Protect from ignition. Keep out of water sources and sewers. Absorb in a dry, inert material (sand, clay, etc.). Transfer to disposal drums using non-sparking equipment.

 

WASTE DISPOSAL (INSURE CONFORMITY WITH ALL APPLICABLE DISPOSAL REGULATIONS):

Incinerate or place in permitted waste management facility. Recycle for reclamation of fluorocarbons.
